Pierce Brosnan as Remington Steele
Stephanie Zimbalist as Private Detective Laura Holt
Storyline
Laura Holt's sister, Frances, is married to a dentist who participates in the Dentists’ Annual Congress in Los Angeles every year. The fact that her husband did not attend the congress this year is regarded by Frances as a sign of disloyalty.
The assumption that her husband is having or could have an affair is first a conflict in love and subsequently turns into rage. Seeking help, she turns to her sister, who has, as a detective, dealt with cheating and infidelity more often.
Laura does some research, and, thus, goes to her sister to present her these findings. No matter the reason why Donald Piper may not have taken his wife to the congress – infidelity was certainly not the case. Even if this information calms her sister down, new problems appear at the horizon.
Two dead bodies are found in the dentist’s hotel room. No motive is known for which Donald’s colleague, Howard, and his assistant could have been brutally murdered. Likewise, it is unknown why this murder was committed precisely in Donald Piper’s hotel room.
Then the dentist thinks of a patient that he has seen on the day of the murder at the congress after, to his knowledge, he had recently lost his life in a fire. Is there a possibility that Wendell Whittaker may not be dead? Could it be that the patient only needs his dental impression to prove that Whittaker did not die in the fire?
There are indications that Whittaker has conducted a sophisticated insurance fraud. Remington Steele is convinced that Whittaker is still alive and will reappear to murder Donald Piper. He allows the dentist to become a decoy when setting a trap for the murderer.
