Storyline

Clarissa Custer turns to the Remington Steele Detective Agency with an assignment. The detectives have to transport a suitcase containing precious gems from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles.

Remington Steele and Laura Holt notice that this is not a routine job when they are ambushed on their way from Santa Barbara to their destination. Fortunately, the case bearing the valuable content is not stolen and they realize that it is giving off a rather strange odor.

Upon their arrival at the destination they are welcomed by the recipient and by Archie Dokes, an insurance expert who is to attest the authenticity of the stones. To their great surprise, the expert can not attest to the authenticity of the stones. According to him, they are mere imitation gemstones.

The recipient is of course outraged and suspects Remington Steele and Laura Holt of having replaced the stones. Because of these suspicions the two private detectives’ license is withdrawn shortly after.

To restore their reputation, the detectives begin their investigation. They wish to find the real jewels, and, of course, get their license back. Shortly thereafter, the insurance expert, Dokes, has a heart attack and dies.

In the course of their investigation they also meet Todd Dokes, son of the late Archie. Todd Dokes works as a marine biologist, and it is in his laboratory that the two detectives find the same smell that was given off by the case during the transportation. Further investigations bring the truth to light.

Their client, Clarissa Custer, has made an agreement with insurance expert Archie Dokes in order to gain possession of the precious gems. Dokes’ son, Todd, was thereby responsible for the deception so that the perpetrators could be granted an unpunished exit maneuver.
