Ewald Strobel

In the TV series Adelheid and her Murders, Chief Inspector Strobel (played by Heinz Baumann) is the chief of the 2nd Homicide Department, called Crime Department 2, of the Hamburg Police, in whose ]anteroom Adelheid Mobius has her dask.

The reason why Ewald Strobel joined the police force is rooted in the family. Ewald's brother had stolen a valuable collection of coins from their father, Otto Strobel, and their father always believed Ewald to be the thief.

This experience was a motivation for Ewald Strobel to join the police. He decided to do everything possible to ensure that no one was punished for an offense that they had not committed.

Though motivated, Strobel is unfortunately not the most unsuccessful investigator, since he is often tapping in the dark while his secretary, Adelheid Mobius, is already on the offender’s track. Intricate and complicated cases are not Strobel’s thing, because he opts for the easy way out. For this reason he always misses important information during an investigation, so that he never manages to solve a case by himself.

As Chief Inspector, Strobel is very proud, and it is that pride that forbids him to take notes and to weigh factors carefully. On the contrary, he makes such suggestions to his secretary, but even their recurring success do not make him any wiser.

He threatens woman Mobius with disciplinary action if she continues to arbitrarily carry out investigations, but this has so far never stopped her from completing her research. As Adelheid Mobius keep getting herself into dangerous situations, Inspector Strobel, is mostly the one who needs to rescue his colleague.

Strobel's position within the police is very important to him, so he also sets great emphasis on not being addressed as Commissioner, but as Chief Inspector, his rightful rank.

Strobel has a culinary preference for canned fish in tomato sauce and a day without pasta or something similar that is sticky is one you’d best forget. This dish is actually a helical noodle dough with a pudding filling and icing which tends to get very sticky when exposed to heat.

Even though he rarely shows it, the opera lover Strobel actually likes Miss Mobius quite a bit. However, this rarely becomes obvious and it is even rarer that he calls Miss Mobius by her first name. Adelheid Mobius does sometimes call her boss by his first name, but she immediately returns to a formal greeting.

Inspector Strobel has an ambivalent relationship to his employees. For example, although he has never taken Commissioner Schubert seriously, he did get used to him. When Commissioner Schilling took the position after his retirement, it took a while until he was accepted as boss.

Apart from Adelheid Mobius, Commissioner Pohl has perhaps the best relationship with Strobel. This is of course due the fact that Pohl always follows the instructions of the head of Crime Department 2. The other reason is that Pohl, like Strobel, is also trying to keep Miss Mobius away from their cases.

In general it can be said that Chief Inspector Strobel actually initially delegates all tasks, to enjoy an inspiring nap on the old sofa in his office.
