Paul Temple

Towards the end of the 30’s of the 20th century, Francis Durbridge created the character of Paul Temple, a crime writer who also worked as an amateur detective. The scenes of crime are usually in high society. Paul Temple is not looking for new cases, he is simply embroiled in spectacular cases - and solves them too. Paul Temple is supported in the investigation of such cases by his wife, Steve, who used to work as a journalist.

The mysteries about the Temple couple contain very little action - rather, they are distinguished by subtle humour and ground dialogs. Paul Temple does not solve his cases by means of fists and revolvers, but with creativity and intelligence. Because of his literary activity and the success of his books, the couple does not need to worry about financial things. Paul and Steve travel extensively throughout Europe and stumble during their travels over a case that has to be solved.

Another main character who repeatedly appears both in books and audio books is Sir Graham Forbes, a friend of the couple Temple. Sir Paul constantly seeks the help of Paul and Steve in order to employ Paul's forensic skills. This character does not appear in the television series, however.

Francis Durbridge wrote a number of novels about the amateur detective Paul Temple, together with Douglas Rutherford, Charles Hatten or John Thewes. The Durbridge / Rutherford books were laid under the joint pseudonym Paul Temple, so that the fictional author also appeared as a real author in the detective stories.
