Most private investigators gather evidence to convict the perpetrators and bring them to justice so that they can be sentenced. Not Mike Hammer. Completely unlike New York private detective Nero Wolfe, Hammer is a very violent detective, for whom one’s political or social position is completely irrelevant.

In response to the allegations regarding the violence of the fictional detective, writer Mickey Spillane said that he wrote his stories for veterans who are no strangers to violence and are able to deal with it.

When he needs certain pieces of information, Hammer turns to Ozzie. The private detective also receives case-by-case assistance from his friend Pat Chambers, investigator with the New York Police Department (NYPD).

Light'n Easy is among the favourite bars of this hardboiled detective. He gladly drinks one or more glasses of whiskey during his flirts with the attractive bartender, Jennie, who enjoys wearing low-cut dresses. Basically, Hammer keeps an office in a large anonymous house in which his secretary Velda writes reports and generally holds down the fort. The most important woman in Mike Hammer's life is, however, Betsie, the revolver, which has accompanied him on his fight against criminals and never let him down.
