Storyline

Since there are currently no open cases, private investigator Remington Steele sets out to travel by car. Suddenly a man walks in front of the car and Remington does not manage to brake the vehicle in time. Spellman, the victim, dies immediately.

What Steele is at this time not yet aware of is that a stranger is trying to make it seem like a murder. As Police Detective Jarvis arrives at the scene, he relies on the information obtained from a stranger to conclude that Steele has murdered the man.

When he explains the situation to the police detective, he is granted no faith and Steele is arrested for the alleged murder. While behind bars, Remington Steele teams up with Laura Holt and Mildred Krebs to find out what really lies behind all of this.

In the course of their investigation, they find evidence pointing to ex-Major Percy Descoine and apparently there is a connection between the murder of the Spellman and the ex-Major. Further investigations provide the insight that Spellman’s murderer had actually not targetted Remington Steele.

His actual target was Laura Holt, who was then responsible for sending Percy Descoine to prison. Then his wife committed suicide. When Laura and Mildred tried visiting Steele in prison to inform him about the latest results of the investigation, it turns out that this is not possible. He has in fact virtually been self-released from prison. Realistically, however, he has simply fled and is now on the run.

Steele is naturally grateful when a stranger kindly offers to take him along in his car. However, he quickly finds out that the stranger is not as friendly as he had thought. He is, in fact, the one responsible for the whole mess. This man, Descoine, drives with Steele in the desert, where he abandones him and sets out to find Laura Holt to seek his revenge. Revenge for his imprisonment and revenge for the death of his wife.
