Storyline

The rich and well-respected Emily Dumont, neglected by her husband, begins a relationship with the young Walter. As Walter begins to blackmail his lover in regards to her infidelity, Emily turns to detective Remington Steele.

Since her husband, Charles Dumont, is intending to throw a reception for Emily a few days later, she fears that her youthful lover could use this occasion for further extortions. What’s worse is that Walter could come clean to her husband and ruin her reputation.

The detectives begin their investigation, but are stopped by Emily's husband, Charles. On the evening of the reception, the dead body of his wife's lover is found in the garden and suspicion falls on Emily Dumont.

In order to blame his wife, he forged various checks and grants in varying amounts. The next day, Charles Dumont also cancelled Remington Steele’s and Laura Holt’s assignment and rewarded their efforts generously.

Laura Holt and Remington Steele, however, are not overly thrilled about closing an unsolved case, especially because a car key was found on the deceased but no matching vehicle. The detectives set out for further investigations, with Remington Steele trying to find the desired vehicle.

In the course of these investigations, Laura Holt finds out that the deceased did not only have an affair with her former client, Emily Dumont. Instead, he had an affair with almost every wife in the prestigious neighborhood of the Dumonts.

Since Walter has certainly not only tried to blackmail Emily Dumont with her infidelity, but all of his other lovers, these wives would have a strong motive to murder their former lover.

It is also interesting that, after Walter's death, all the deceived husbands were looking in the apartment of the victim for evidence that could possibly reveal a connection between the unfaithful women and the victim. The evidence unveiled leads the detective to Anne Montague, who also had an affair with Walter, and Anne's husband, Tommy.
